When you trigger rmate on a remote box, it will connect back to your box, allow you to edit, and update the file on the server with the changes.

Устанавливаю по инструкции
https://github.com/textmate/rmate
вне зависимости от настроек подключения к альту получаю ошибку
/usr/local/bin/rmate: строка 412: /dev/tcp/localhost/52698: Нет такого файла или каталога
Unable to connect to TextMate on localhost:52698

На ubuntu (20.04.5) и debian vps серверах все работает отлично. Клиент на macOS 10.15.7
